How it Works

DURATION: 5 YEARS

  • Including a 1-year probationary period.

  • Up to 2,000 hours of on-the-job training.

  • A minimum of 216 hours of classroom instruction per year.

CORE COURSES

  • Safety Protocols

  • Blueprint Reading

  • Mathematics and Science

  • Tool Care

  • Must be at least 18 years old before the start of the school year.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Valid driver's license, pass a drug test, and physical capability to perform the work.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Benefits for Today and Tomorrow

Union members of the building and construction trades typically receive higher wages and better benefits than those

employed by non-union contractors.

PAY

Apprentices get paid while receiving valuable education and job training. A Local 157 worker's pay ranges from $22.72 to $47.50 per hour.

DEBT-FREE EDUCATION

All apprentices earn an Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences from

Ivy Tech Community College without the burden of student loans.

JOB SECURITY

Apprentices work with a highly-skilled network of professionals with access to diverse employment opportunities.

COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING

Our program includes up to 1,500 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 246 hours of classroom instruction annually. Classes cover essential topics such as safety, mathematics, science, and tool usage.

1st Year - 55% of Journeyman Rate

2nd Year - 60% of Journeyman Rate

3rd Year - 65% of Journeyman Rate

4th Year - 75% of Journeyman Rate

5th Year - 85% of Journeyman Rate

The Local 157 Apprenticeship is a high-tech program that trains people with little or no knowledge of the craft to become highly-skilled and sought-after journeymen.
 

Apprentices in our program learn about layout, design, construction, and installation of piping fabrication, HVAC,  and welding.

Application Process

SUBMIT APPLICATION

Complete and submit the apprenticeship application form.

ENTRANCE EXAM

Successfully complete the Math and Apprentice Assessment Tests.

3

INTERVIEW

Attend an interview with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.

4

SELECTION

If selected, attend New Apprentice Orientation and begin the first year of apprenticeship.
